Our Story

The Village Local

The Canal Duke has stood at the heart of Astley for as long as most locals can remember, serving the village with the same simple promise: a well-kept pint, honestly priced, and a proper welcome for whoever walks through the door.

We've never seen the sense in charging over the odds for a decent pint, so we don't. The pub keeps that same spirit of hospitality throughout: a proper bar for a pint after work, a dining room for a Sunday roast with the family, and a private room for the occasions that call for something a little more special. The building has changed hands over the years, but the welcome at the door has stayed the same. Today that also means two outdoor seating areas and a small play area for younger visitors.

Provenance

We buy from local farms and suppliers wherever we can, and we're happy to tell you exactly where your dinner came from.

Craft

From the cellar to the kitchen pass, everything is done properly, by hand, and without shortcuts.

Welcome

Whether you're stopping in for one after work or booking the room for a christening, you'll be looked after the same way.

Private Dining & Functions

Our function room seats up to 40 guests and is available for hire throughout the week, for celebrations, wakes and private parties. We're easily reached from Tyldesley and the wider Manchester area. Bespoke menus available on request.

Good Things Are Cooking

We're building a brand-new kitchen at The Canal Duke — proper, seasonal food to match a well-kept pint. The menu's still under wraps, but it'll be worth the wait. Watch this space.

Fancy a pint in the meantime? The bar's open every day — no booking needed.
